The Semiconductor Chip Shortage: What You Need to Know
With all the current events flooding your inbox, the airwaves and news, you have probably heard about the chip shortage (aka microchip, semiconductor). But you might not know exactly what it entails, how we got here and where things are headed. Below are some helpful insights about the shortage and specifically how it has impacted Honda:
What are “chips”?
Microchips, semiconductors, or chips are basically tiny transistors made from silicon that are used in everyday electronics like your phone, laptop, smart tv, etc. They are also used in all modern cars to power and direct things like an LCD touchscreen display, the navigation system, some safety features - and more.
Why is there a shortage?
COVID-19 has been a major factor in the shortage, from the early 2020 factory shutdowns and increased demand for other products using chips - like phones and computers. With the shift for so many to work from home, and with a higher profit margin for those home computing and telecommunications items, the available chips went more to those electronics products ahead of cars and trucks. While there are some other factors at play, the take-away is that we are all still trying to find how to conduct business as usual in this new era.
How has Honda been impacted?
Not all car manufacturers have been impacted the same way nor have all reacted the same way to the current global semiconductor shortage. Earlier this year, Honda cut production due to the chip shortage but all of the North American plants were back to normal production by April 2021. Even still, Honda continues to adapt and change. For example, some new cars will only come one one key fob (instead of two) but will also come with traditional keys should the fob not work and you need to unlock or start your car.
Additionally, as with the larger supply chain issues, Honda is experiencing some parts shortages. As a brand, they are handling these issues on a case-by-case basis.
